Why do we need a month devoted to Women’s History?

That’s a valid question. Women’s History Month commemorates and encourages the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.

As with other months devoted to a single theme like Black History Month, or Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the purpose is to bring awareness to the stories, triumphs, tragedies, and heroes that go largely unnoticed.

The Women's History Month theme for 2022 is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” This theme recognizes how women have provided healing and hope to humanity for countless generations. It’s a theme that probably somehow resonates with every human being across the world.

There’s no shortage of famous and influential women who exemplify the theme of nurturer, caregiver, trailblazer, or world leader. I’m confident we can easily name at least one or two women we’ve seen in the news or on TV doing meaningful work and impacting change.

But what about the women you actually know?

This month, let’s bring the sentiment of Women’s History Month closer to home and celebrate the everyday women that may not make the news but are shaping lives and impacting their local communities every bit as much.

Often we take these unsung heroines for granted because they are adept at handling multiple roles with dignity and grace. They make it look effortless, so we forget to cherish and acknowledge them.

These women are our:

  • Mothers and stepmothers
  • Sisters and daughters
  • Neighbors and best friends
  • Grandmothers and great aunts

They are warriors among us:

  • Women who are cancer-survivors
  • Women who have triumphed over domestic abuse
  • Women who use their trauma and tragedy to help other women in the same situation.
  • Women who have survived sexual assault
  • Women who have lost a spouse or child

These are the women I look up to because they embody strength, determination, optimism, and the resolve not to give up. They don’t think of themselves as role models, but just by their daily actions of surviving, flourishing, and giving back, they’re heroes to us.

My brand mission is to celebrate strong, resilient, successful, professional women and women making strides in all walks of life through my jewelry designs.

Who will you celebrate this month?

Consider the women who handle life so effortlessly that we take them for granted. Who are those women in your life deserving of a hug, a sweet note, or a random text to let them know you see them?

Could she be:

  • Your mother who’s caring for her elderly parents?
  • Your co-worker who covered your shift when your baby was sick?
  • Your neighbor who welcomed you to the neighborhood with a plate of warm brownies?
  • The woman on the subway who gave up her seat for a disabled man?
